What A 7-Year Study About Chiropractors Revealed

A Landmark Study on ChiropractorsWhat would an unbiased study on chiropractors, led by a well-renowned medical doctor actually prove?  Would the myths about chiropractic finally come out to prove to the chiropractic community that allopathic medicine (drugs, surgery) always come out triumphant?

The first study collected data from 1999 though 2002 with the expanded study done from 2003 to 2005. The lead investigators for both studies were Dr. Richard Sarnat, MD and Dr. James Winterstein, DC.

For the entire 7-year study period from 1999 to 2005, patients who utilized chiropractors as primary care physicians had 60% fewer hospitalizations, 62% fewer outpatient surgical cases and 85% lower pharmaceutical costs. Incidentally, chiropractors also had higher patient satisfaction scores, too.

Here’s what Dr. Sarnat had to say about the findings: “I have always believed that the over-utilization of pharmaceuticals and surgery, and the underutilization of more natural healing techniques, such as Chiropractic, has been the cause of great suffering. Yet, I had no idea that the magnitude of both clinical improvements and cost effectiveness would approach 50% in both cases.

“Previous studies have shown these types of savings when Chiropractic has been used as a
first-line treatment for NMS (neuromusculoskeletal) ailments, instead of conventional medical
care. But to see this level of effectiveness across the board for literally all types of clinical presentations within a primary care setting is surprising to me, and good news for the rest of the world.”

The study undoubtedly proves that serving as healthcare providers, chiropractors provide substantial savings for the patient, as well as lowering the need for surgery.

Treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy in Augusta, GA

neuropathyWhat is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy describes damage to the peripheral nervous system, the vast communications network that transmits information from the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) to every other part of the body.

Peripheral nerves also send sensory information back to the brain and spinal cord, such as a message that the feet are cold or a finger is burned. Damage to the peripheral nervous system interferes with these vital connections. Like static on a telephone line, peripheral neuropathy distorts and sometimes interrupts messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

The symptoms of peripheral neuropathy often include:

  • A sensation of wearing an invisible “glove” or “sock”
  • Burning sensation or freezing pain
  • Sharp, jabbing or electric-like pain
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
  • Difficulty sleeping because of feet and leg pain
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Muscle weakness
  • Difficulty walking or moving the arms
  • Unusual sweating
  • Abnormalities in blood pressure or pulse

How Chiropractic Can Help Neuropathy

Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors.  Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone.

Numerous studies have proven chiropractic’s effectiveness in helping nerve conditions…

Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments.

- Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008
With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.”

– JMPT 1998
What these studies mean is that with chiropractic care, you could soon be enjoying life…without
those aggravating nerve problems.

5 Things You’re Not Supposed to Know About Chiropractors

5 Things You're Not Supposed To Know About ChiropracticWhether you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, or you happen to be a regular patient, chances are there may be some facts about chiropractors that you may not currently know.  Not too long ago, PH & W Magazine published a great article: 5 Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About Chiropractors.  Below is a summary of the published article–a perfect rundown to keep in mind for anyone debating whether or not a chiropractor may be of value to them.

So What Are The 5 Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About Chiropractors?

1. Their education is equal to their medical colleagues … and might be better in some areas.

A study of the curriculum of North American chiropractic and medical colleges found “Considerable commonality exists between chiropractic and medical programs. Regarding the basic sciences, these programs are more similar than dissimilar.” Even more interesting was a test given to both chiropractic and medical students. Chiropractic students scored higher than medical students on the musculoskeletal (bones, joints, and muscles) portion of the exam, while the medical students faired slightly better in other areas.  In another study, chiropractors and chiropractic students tested “significantly higher” in reading X-Rays when compared with their medical colleagues in a study at the University of California Medical Center.

2. They do more than crunch backs and necks.

While chiros are known for treating back and neck problems with joint manipulation. Most are well versed and board certified to perform physical therapies.  They are also licensed to function as primary care physicians.  Based on their education many use nutrition as a form of treatment.

3. It’s Safe.

Even though ghost stories of adjustments gone wrong are common, the actual risk of injury from chiropractic treatment is rare. Generally, the malpractice insurance that doctors have to pay is based, among other things, on their field. Chiropractors as a group pay the less for malpractice insurance than any other type of physician. Why? Lawsuits claiming injuries or negligence are less common against chiropractors.

 4. They took the American Medical Association to court … and won … twice.

Chiropractors claimed the AMA was trying to snuff out the competition with fear tactics and bogus research. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed with them in 1987… and again in 1990. It was found that the AMA was guilty of illegal antitrust activities against the chiropractic profession, ordered an injunction on their activity, and forcing them to print the courts findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

5. M.D.’s and D.C.’s are working together.

It’s becoming more common to find integrated offices, where M.D.’s, D.O.’s, and D.C.’s are working side-by-side. Many medical offices now try to provide multi-specialty approaches to treatment. With natural forms of treatment becoming more popular, drugless forms of treatment have become preferred by many over painmedication.

When Popping A Pill Does More Harm Than Good

According to a startling report released in the summer of 2006 by the Institute of medicine, at least 1.5 million patients are injured each year by medication errors.  And what about the fatality rate?  The groundbreaking 2003 medical report Death by Medicine, by Drs. Gary Null, Carolyn Dean, Martin Feldman, Debora Rasio and Dorothy Smith discovered that 783,936 people in the United States die every year from conventional medicine mistakes. That’s the equivalent of six jumbo jet crashes a day for an entire year.

Treatment for Neck Pain in Augusta, GA

It’s estimated that 75 percent of Americans deal with neck pain at some point in their lives. Neck pain accounts for millions of trips to the doctor every year. At Georgia Clinic of Chiropractic (Augusta, GA) we see many patients who have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars trying to find relief from neck pain before undergoing chiropractic care. Many are surprised at how quickly they are able to notice a significant improvement due to chiropractic. The New York Times recently published an article demonstrating how chiropractic and exercise are more effective than prescription medication.

Any joint of the spine, from the neck all the way down to the sacroiliac joints, can cause mechanical pain. Joints are designed to move and when they do not, pain and degeneration occurs. Conservative treatment is designed for maximizing motion, improving flexibility and finally maximizing muscular coordination, endurance and strength. Given the vast components of your neck, any number of activities or accidents can trigger a need for chiropractic care. For example, whiplash, also called neck sprain or neck strain, is an injury to the soft tissues of the neck. It is usually caused by sudden extension (backward movement of the neck) and flexion (forward movement of the neck). This type of injury is often the result of rear-end car crashes. A stinger, on the other hand, is an injury that occurs when the head or neck is hit to one side, causing the shoulder to be pulled in the opposite direction. A side collision of this type causes immediate and intense pain, as well as a tingling or burning sensation in the neck that runs down the arm to the fingers.

Seeking chiropractic care tailored for your specific neck condition first would allow you to pursue a more conservative, nonsurgical avenue of care. We tell patients at Georgia Clinic of Chiropractic that neck surgery will always be there waiting for them should they need it as a last resort. In many cases, our chiropractic patients are able to resolve their neck complaints without needing to rely on prescription drugs or invasive surgery.

An Advocate for Fibromyalgia Sufferers: Retired Brigadier General Halstead

We are humbled each and every day at Georgia Clinic of Chiropractic to treat our heroes—those who currently serve in the military and those retired.   With men and women who selflessly serve with their lives every day, we need to remember their sacrifices and what we can do to honor and give back to these heroes.  One particular individual is standing strong in making sure they are getting the best healthcare possible.  Retired Brigadier General, Rebecca S. Halstead, speaks with authority as both a retired member of the U.S. Army and a patient of chiropractic when she states, “The Military is our best resource.  They deserve the best health care; and chiropractic is the best care.”  Currently an active proponent for the advancement of chiropractic both in general public awareness and specifically the benefits of its availability to those in the military, this influential and inspiring leader knows a thing or two about overcoming challenges—and the benefits of chiropractic.

She rose through the ranks to become the first female graduate of West Point promoted to General Officer and the first woman in U.S. history to command combat at the strategic level in the Combat Theater of Iraq.  She has repelled out of helicopters, body bumped and bruised; and led troops through the toughest terrains.  She has earned a well-decorated uniform, exampling excellence in action.  Her military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal; the Defense Superior Service Medal; two awards of the Legion of Merit; the Bronze Star Medal; five awards of the Meritorious Service Medal; two awards of the Army Commendation Medal; and the Army Achievement Medal. She also earned the Air Assault Badge and the Army Staff Identification Badge.  And, for a good portion of this time, she has carried a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia—a set of symptoms that include widespread muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and other debilitating factors.

It wasn’t until she retired in 2008, when she was enlisted into the care of a chiropractor that she began to experience the full advantages of regular chiropractic care.  General Halstead has willingly used this familiarity with the personal benefits of chiropractic, her name of notoriety, and her position of prominence to advocate for millions of military personnel and their families to receive the improved health and wellness of regular chiropractic care.  TRICARE, the health program for military personnel and retirees, evaluated patients’ response to chiropractic care. The enormously high patient satisfaction rates astounded the TRICARE administrators, with scores that ranged from 94.3 percent in the Army. The Air Force tally was also high, with 12 of 19 bases scoring 100 percent; and the Navy also reported ratings in the 90 percent or higher. Even the TRICARE outpatient satisfaction surveys (TROSS) rated chiropractors at 88.54, which was 10 percent “higher than the overall satisfaction with all [health care] providers.”

Halstead said she tried to keep her diagnosis quiet because she believed she could press through. Over time, that changed.  “I thought that if I pushed myself hard enough and tried hard enough, I could continue to serve in the military with this disease, but I recognized that I could not and I had to do something different,” she said, adding she chose to retire rather than be discharged medically. “I wanted to walk out the door on my own two feet with my head up high knowing I had given it everything I had.”  Now that she is under regular chiropractic care for her fibromyalgia, she says she’s off the more than dozen prescriptions she was taking and feels better than ever.  She goes on to say that “If I had had more access to sustained chiropractic care [when I was in active duty], I would probably still be in the military.”
